Lack of substantial sleep will mess with even the most Stoic of minds, and this is exactly what happens in Insomnia, starring Al Pacino. Though not necessarily a twist by conventional standards, Pi shows us how fragile the mind could truly be if we push it to the limits, and the ending certainly caught us off guard. He performs a lobotomy on himself to ease the pain after burning the 216-digit number that has caused him all of his troubles, and at the end of the film is unable to perform even the simplest of mathematical tasks. Max’s delusions only get worse, and he believes that his headaches and his theory are somehow connected.

Plagued by cluster headaches, and delusions, Max gets lost in his work, and through a connection at the local Synagogue, is led to believe that the numbers have some sort of divine meaning behind it that will usher in a new messianic era because the number represents god. The story is about a number theorist named Max Cohen who is capable of solving complex mathematical equations, and uses his knowledge to try to manipulate the stock market. When Anna is committed once again for killing Rachel, we’re shown that Mildred Kemp was in the neighboring cell at the institution, and that’s where this delusion came from in the first place.ġ998’s Piis a conceptual psychological thriller that boasts anything but simple math. And though it wasn’t apparent at the time, we’re shown through flashbacks that Anna’s conversations with Alex were all taking place in her head, as her sister had been killed. But as the film progresses, Anna’s behavior becomes questionable, and her dreams of the fire become more and more vivid.Īt the end of the film, we learn that it was actually Anna who set the fire, killing both her mother and sister, after finding out her father was having an affair. Anna and Alex team up to figure out who Rachel really is, and come to the conclusion that Rachel is actually a nanny who kills children, named Mildred Kemp. Anna and Alex are sisters, who are suspicious of their father’s new lover Rachel, who is now living with their family after their biological mother mysteriously died in a guest house fire one year prior an event that was so traumatic, that it landed Anna in a psychiatric hospital for 10 months. Speaking of being dead the entire time, we need to talk about Anna and Alex from The Uninvited. Though the ending comes off as a surprise, the worst part about this twist is that Faraday’s students believe the official statement on the news in regard to the domestic terrorist attack, because his wife was killed by the FBI years prior, and his grudge with the institution was apparent. In a wild game of cat and mouse, Faraday ends up being the only unauthorized person on the property when a bomb that was planted in the back of his car explodes, causing the building to collapse. Though his suspicions about Lang are confirmed, what we don’t know is that Faraday is actually the fall guy in Lang’s plot to blow up the building.

Faraday, who is a man with his own grudges against the FBI, becomes increasingly paranoid over Lang’s plot to blow up an FBI building, but his paranoia gets the best of him. Our protagonist, Michael Faraday ( Jeff Bridges) suspects his neighbor Oliver Lang (Tim Robbins) of being a domestic terrorist. 1999’s Arlington Road is one of those films that shows you that there is always more happening behind closed doors than meets the eye.
